Together Again

It really has never felt so good to be home. I've also never been so excited to go home from a foreign country before...I know it's because of who I was coming home to.

After a long, sleepless flight, I got my baggage and headed out the door to where people were waiting. I always hate this part because you never know where people will be waiting for you. And because you know that whoever is picking you up can see you, but you can't see them. Anyway, it just makes me feel super nervous. So, my coping method is usually to keep my head down, avoiding eye contact, while quickly pushing my baggage cart to the right.

A few seconds after I got to the right side of the waiting area, suddenly arms wrapped around me from behind in a tight hug and I heard the sound of Matthew's voice. I was so overwhelmed with emotion and burst into tears. That's never happened to me before! I know that I've really missed him, and it was the happiest feeling ever to be reunited again. I felt so complete...and at peace. It was so strange and amazing to see Matthew as a real person and not just as a webcam shot on my computer screen. Anyway, we spent quite a while standing there in the airport...it felt like everyone around us just disappeared. We were in our own world...together again.

Being home has been so great. We're so happy to be together! It's almost like being newlyweds again...we're getting used to living together again and everything is new and exciting. I feel so grateful to be with the man I love and to get to live together again. It's so nice. Eating breakfast together, planning everything together, having late-night talks, everything. I also feel a great sense of accomplishment and peace in knowing that I've done something that I've always wanted to do, and that I needed to do.

This time apart hasn't been easy, but it has been a very important in the development of our marriage. Being away from each other has enabled us to see ourselves from outside ourselves, to recognize our own weaknesses and shortcomings, and to truly appreciate each other in a way we never did before. It's really easy to take someone for granted, but when you're alone and far away from that person you really have the ability to reflect and see things as they truly are.

Vietnam was an amazing experience on so many levels and it was something that we needed to do. I'm so grateful I went, and I am even more grateful to be home.
